The top Swiss tourism body has announced that Martin Nydegger will take over from his predecessor Jürg Schmid as head of the organisation. The 46-year-old Nydegger has been a member of Switzerland Tourism’s executive board since 2008.

A selection committee within Switzerland Tourism’s Board of Directors selected Nydegger for the post earlier this week, and announced the decision on Friday after the Swiss cabinet approved the move. He will formally take over as CEO of Switzerland Tourism on January 1, 2018.

“Based on his international tourism experience, his strategic expertise and cosmopolitan spirit, not to mention an element of continuity, he is the right person to take Switzerland Tourism successfully into a new era,” said Jean-François Roth, president of the Board of Directors, in a statement.

Nydegger previously managed the Switzerland Tourism branch in Amsterdam for three years, and is a former director of the Engadin/Scuol Tourism Board in canton Graubünden.

He replaces Schmid, who announced in May he was leaving his post after 18 years at the helm of Switzerland Tourism. During that time, the organisation dealt with challenges such as changes to the tourism sector in the internet era and the continuing influence of the strong Swiss franc on visitors to Switzerland.
